The Colombo High Court today (Jun 26) acquitted nine suspects over the killing of five persons in Mattakkuliya in 2016.
While delivering the verdict, High Court Judge Aditya Patabendige said the witness statements against the accused had contradicted each other. This had been accepted by the prosecution as well, the Judge told an open court.
Judge Patabendige said in his judgement that there were serious flaws in the investigations carried out by the Police into the incident. Accordingly, court held that the prosecution had failed to prove the charges against the suspects beyond a reasonable doubt.
Meanwhile, the High Court Judge had also thanked the attorney's representing the prosecution and the accused for co-operating in order to conclude hearing of the case within five months after commencing in January.
