A former accountant of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) at the Kelaniya Divisional Secretariat has been sentenced to 37 years of rigorous imprisonment for defrauding Rs 12 million belonging to the NWSDB.
The sentence was passed when the case was taken up for a hearing before Colombo High Court judge Gihan Kulathunga today (Apr 02). While issuing the verdict, the Judge also instructed the suspect to pay a penalty of Rs 13 million to the NWSDB over the fraud.
The former NWSDB officer was found guilty of forging the signature of the former Manager of the Kelaniya Provincial branch.
Accordingly, Judge Kulathunga further imposed a fine of Rs 4 million under the condition that the suspect will be sentenced to an additional 23 years in the case of failure to do so.
The accused, 66-year old Ananda Mabole was charged for committing the fraud by using the forged signature on 57 cheques in 2005.
