Leaders of several countries have congratulated Gotabaya Rajapaksa on his election to office as President yesterday (Nov 17).
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his twitter handle said he hopes to enhance the close ties between both countries "for peace, prosperity as well as security in our region"

His office said that the president-elect had accepted the Indian Prime Minister's invitation to visit India.
PM Modi extended an invitation to Mr. Rajapaksa to visit India at his early convenience. The invitation was accepted.

Among others who posted congratulatory messages were Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and his predecessor Mohamed Nasheed.
Solih, in his Twitter account, said he hopes to enhance ties between both countries while congratulating Rajapaksa for his "resounding election victory".

Former President Nasheed described the relationship between Maldives and Sri Lanka as important for both countries, to "create prosperity for both our peoples".

Meanwhile, US Ambassador Alaina Teplitz said she hopes to work with Rajapaksa, on issues of "good governance, economic growth, the advancement of human rights and reconciliation in support of a strong, sovereign Sri Lanka"
