Two Fundamental Rights petitions have been filed at the Supreme Court challenging the President's decision to take over the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation under the Ministry of Defence by the issuing of a gazette.
Ven. Dambara Amila Thero and Professor Chandragupta Thenuwara had filed the fundamental rights petitions today (Sept 17).
According to the petitioners, the President under the 19th Amendment to the Constitution is only allowed to assign to himself the subjects and functions of the ministries of Defence, Mahaweli Development and Environment.
As such the petitioners argued that the decision to bring the SLRC under the purview of the President was in violation of the Constitution, and therefore sought a court order to declare the move as an unlawful.
