The Government has decided to reduce expenses for the upcoming 72nd Independence Day celebration by 30 percent.
An official from the Ministry of Public Administration stated that the number of those taking part in the Independence Day procession will also be reduced by about 30 percent as a measure to cut down expenses.
Accordingly, the military parade scheduled for this year's celebration too would be reduced in size.
The 72nd Independence Day celebration will be held on February 4 at Independence Square.
A meeting chaired by Minister of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government Janaka Bandara Tennakoon was held on Tuesday (14) at Independence Square on preparations to hold the celebration.
The official stated that the Government has also instructed that rehearsals for the Independence Day celebration too be held without closing off main roads. The organizing committee has been instructed to keep public inconvenience to a minimum when organizing rehearsals for the celebration.
