The Government will set up a body to regulate engineers in Sri Lanka after Cabinet approved a proposal to establish an Engineering Council.
The Engineering Council will be responsible for maintaining professional status and regulating engineers.
The proposal to establish the Engineering Council was jointly presented by Minister of Power and Renewable Energy, Ranjith Siyambalapitiya and Minister of Megapolis and Western Development, Patali Champika Ranawaka.
They had pointed out that an acknowledged method is not followed such as in medical and legal fields for registering and issuing licences for engineering practitioners in Sri Lanka and that such a method was necessary.
Accordingly, Cabinet approved the proposal to establish the Engineering Council and to publish in the gazette the Engineering Council, Sri Lanka Bill for enacting provisions for registration of engineers and related tasks and to present it in parliament for approval.
