The government today warned the public of possible food shortages within year due to the severe drought prevailing in the country.
Minister of Disaster Management Anura Priyadarshana Yapa told a news conference that the government is planning to import 250,000 metric tons of rice to face this situation.
Due to the irregular rainfall that the country received last year water levels of major tanks have been minimized drastically that would affect agriculture and power generation adversely as a result.
The minister requested the public to save water and power as this dry weather would prevail for another three months.
He noted that the negligence of general public in using natural resources in the past has led to a severe condition like this.
