A 'Hartal' campaign was launched in Ambalantota today (May 08) as black flags hung outside shops to protest against the decision to provide shelter to a group of Pakistani refugees at a state-run rehabilitation camp in Ridiyagama.
Residents claimed that peace in the area could be affected due to this move, and therefore urged that these refugees must be moved away from the rehabilitation camp.
Accordingly, they insisted that the government must bear responsibility if any sort of violence erupts in the area. A complaint in this regard has also been filed at the Ambalantota Police by area residents and priests.
Commenting on this issue, Unions in Ambalantota said that the moves taken to provide lodging for these refugees could serve as a contributing factor to disrupt the peace that has existed among all communities in the area.
