Police have arrested 160 people within a span of 24 hours for illegal garbage dumping in the Western Province. Police Media Unit stated that the operation was conducted from August 8 to 9 covering the whole province.
Nugegoda had the most number of people arrested for illegal garbage dumping, with 40 being taken into custody. Thirty-four people were arrested from Colombo Central while 20 were arrested from Colombo North.
Other arrests were as follows: Gampaha - 18, Kelaniya -13, Negombo - 12, Colombo South - 12, Mount Lavinia - 10 and Panadura - 01.
Police stations in the respective areas that the suspects were taken into custody will file charges in court against them, police added. The operations to apprehend iillegal garbage dumpers will continue.
