A 31-year-old railway carriage has been converted to a mail rail carriage for the Postal Department. The carriage was converted by the Department of Railways and Tantri Trailers (Pvt) Ltd as part of a project to refurbish 200 railway carriages. The mail rail carriage was the 173rd carriage to be converted under this project.
The project to refurbish 200 railway carriages is part of a larger programme to add 500 railway carriages for Sri Lanka Railways.
The 31-year-old carriage converted to a railway post office was originally imported from Romania in 1989. Measuring 45 feet in length, it has 180 mail sorters and many other facilities, including enough space for 10 persons to work at the same time.
