In pictures: Aftermath of Salawa camp explosion

News

While the fire at the ammunition dump at the Salawa army camp in Kosgama, Avissawella, has now been completely doused, a large number of unexploded ordnance can still be seen at many locations in the area. Unexploded munitions were seen along roads, in the gardens of houses and inside the houses themselves. The army is currently engaged in safely defusing the munitions.

Many houses in the immediate vicinity of the camp have sustained severe damage in the incident. Residents of these houses are still housed in temporary shelters that have been set up to care for them.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and other senior Government officials visited the area today to inspect the damage and to discuss the situation with relevant officials.
