The inaugural session of the 9th Parliament commenced at 9.30 a.m. Today (20). Matara district MP Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the House.
MP Abeywardena’s name was proposed by Leader of the House MP Dinesh Gunawardena and seconded by MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara.
MP Ranjith Siyambalapitiya will be the Deputy Speaker. MP Dinesh Gunewardena assumed duties as the Leader of the House while MP Johnston Fernando was appointed as the Chief Government Whip prior to the inaugural gathering. The 9th Parliament consists of 81 MPs elected for the first time.
MP Angajan Ramanathan was unanimously elected as the Deputy Chairperson of Committees.
