The Chennai team of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 23.1 kg of gold smuggled into India from Sri Lanka at Egmore Railway Station and arrested four persons, India Today reported.
The DRI acted on specific intelligence that a syndicate was smuggling gold from Sri Lanka into India by boat, and that certain individuals would reach Chennai with the smuggled gold via Rameswaram Chennai Sethu Express on Thursday morning.
Detailed examination of the pouches revealed that the gang had brought 123 gold bars, weighing 23.1 kilograms.
They admitted that the bars had been smuggled into India from Sri Lanka, and that it had been handed over to them by certain people based in Ramanathapuram, with instructions to deliver at Chennai for a commission.
In the last 30 days, the officers of DRI Chennai Zonal Unit have seized over 53 kgs of gold.
