Five Sri Lankan fishermen who ventured to sea from Mannar fishing harbour were arrested in Dhanushkodi, Tamil Nadu last night by Indian Coast Guard over the charges of poaching in Indian territorial waters, according to fishermen Unions in Mannar.
Along with them, one fishing boat was also seized by the Indian authorities. The families of Lankan fishermen requested government authorities to take immediate steps to secure the release of the fishermen.
Meanwhile, Fishermen Unions in North staged a protest today in front of the Indian Consulate Office in Jaffna against ongoing poaching activities by Indian fishermen and urged the government to implement the law banning bottom trawling in Lankan territorial sea. Fishermen alleged that their livelihood is under threat due to poaching by Indian fishermen.
