Popular Indian singer S P Balasubrahmanyam laid the foundation stone for an eye hospital worth Rs 150 million in Vavuniya yesterday (Sept 4).
A portion of the funding would be borne by a rehabilitation centre in London.
The foundation laying ceremony had taken place in the Omanthai area in the district.
The Vavuniya District Secretary, former Northern Provincial Health Minister Dr P Sathyalingam, the Deputy Inspector General of Police for Vanni, and the Officer-in-charge of the Omanthai Police were present.
The term of the Northern Provincial Council ended in October last year.
The final rites of veteran broadcaster, writer, and lyricist Nirmala de Alwis will be held today at Peradeniya.
