Island-wide program to check filling stations

The Ministry of Petroleum Industries will commence a program this month to check filling stations island-wide for possible tampering of fuel pumps and storage tanks. 

Secretary to the Ministry Upali Marasinghe stated that the program is being conducted in the wake of complaints by the public of an alledged scam being conducted at some filling stations where their vehicles are being pumped less fuel for the amount they pay. 

Accordingly, teams from the Ministry will be joined by officials from the Measurement Units, Standards and Services Department during the inspections to check whether fuel pumps, meters and storage tanks have been tampered with at any filling station, the Secretary explained. 

He asserted that legal action will be taken against anyone found to have tampered with filling station equipment as part of a scam.
