The 1st death anniversary of Police Sergeant Sarath Hemachandra, who was the security officer for then Jaffna High Court Judge M. Ilanchelian, was commemorated on Sunday (22) at the home of the officer at Kumarakattuwa in Chilaw.
Judge Illanchelian, who is now the High Court Judge in Trincomalee, also took part in the commemoration.
Sergeant Hemachandra was shot dead at Nallur in Jaffna on July 22 while he was serving as a motorcycle outrider for the judge.
Judge Illanchelian also attended Sergeant Hemachandra's funeral and describing the slain officer as a close friend, pledged that he would look into the future of Sergeant Hemachandra's two children.
Accordingly, with the intervention of Judge Illanchelian, the half built house that Sergeant Hemchandra was constructing for his family at the time of his death has now been completed.
