The country's first waste to energy power plant will be opened in Kerawalapitiya in April, Power and Energy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.
The power plant will add 10MW to the national grid.
Minister Amaraweera said the plant will be able to process 1000 Metric Tonnes of garbage. "About 660MT of garbage is collected within the Colombo Municipal Council City limits. Since we can process more than just Colombo's garbage, I have asked them to also to bring in garbage from Moratuwa and Mt. Lavinia as well. We believe this will end Colombo's garbage issue," he claimed.
Mr Amaraweera further said he had instructed that steps be taken to set up two such waste to energy plants in Kandy and Galle too to resolve the garbage issues in those areas.
