Key appointments in Sri Lanka yet to be approved

News

Key appointments as Central Bank Governor, Treasury Secretary and heads of the CEB, CPC and Securities and Exchange Commission in Sri Lanka's new administration are yet to be approved amidst swirling and confusing media reports, a close advisor to President Maithripala Sirisena's government said on Monday.
Among those short-listed or tipped (or speculated in the media) to receive these positions are Ranjit Fernando, Dinesh Weerakkody, Arjuna Mahendran, Indrajith Coomaraswamy, W.A. Wijewardena and R.A. Jayatissa among others. There is also a debate among coalition partners and professionals groups on the need to appoint serving public officials to positions like the Treasury, etc and end the period of politicisation of these positions, a reference to the control that former Treasury Secretary P.B. Jayasundera and former Central Bank Governor Ajit Nivard Cabraal had.
"While most of the nominees for these positions have been finalised, the President is very busy in dealing with many issues at the same time and these (appointments) are unlikely to be announced until a cabinet is announced which may happen today," the advisor said. - ENDS -
