The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has issued a landslide warning to the Kandy district, while extending similar warnings issued to Kurunegala, Badulla, and Ratnapura, until 6 pm today (Oct 18).
The landsilde warning in Kandy has been issued to the areas located in the Gangawata Korale Divisional Secretariat, and will be in effect until 6 pm.
Landslide warnings to other areas include the Rideegama and Mawathagama Divisional Secretariats in Ratnapura, the Haldamulla Divisional Secretariat in Badulla, and the Balangoda, Imbulpe and Opanayake divisional secretariats in Kandy.
The Meteorological Department in its weather forecast, predicted that showers could be experienced in several areas after 1 pm. Showers are expected to increase in the Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa and North Western provinces, today and tomorrow.
The forecast predicted heavy rains measuring between 100 - 150 mm in the Kalutara, Kegalle, Ratnapura, Kurunegala, Puttalam, Gampaha, and Kandy districts, over the next 24 hours.
The Colombo, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Anuradhapura, Mannar, and Vavuniya districts are also expected to receive rains between 75 - 100 mm.
Strong winds between 70 and 80 kmph could be experienced in the seas surrounding Sri Lanka, the Meteorological Department said.
