The travel ban imposed on parliamentarian Mahindananda Aluthgamage in a misappropriation case was temporarily lifted by the High Court today (Jun 04).
Aluthgamage has been accused of misusing funds worth Rs 3.9 million belonging to the Sri Lanka Freedom Workers Congress.
During today's court hearing, lawyer Kanchana Ratwatte appearing for the parliamentarian sought to lift the travel ban for his client to obtain medical treatment in Singapore from June 13 - 18.
Judge Aditya Patabendi while explaining his decision to lift the travel ban told open court that the Indian judicial system has considered the need to travel overseas as a fundamental right.
However, he noted that court must be informed before any individual involved in a case is required to travel overseas.
Meanwhile, Aluthgamage's lawyer asked court permission to further cross question Kahawage Douglas who provided evidence against his client who is the accused in the case.
In response, the Judge said that a decision on the request will be announced when the case is taken up for further hearing on July 25.
