Rs 5000 million diamond theft suspect 'Kaluma' further remanded till April 5

The main suspect in the theft of a diamond valued at Rs 5000 million, identified as Kelum Indika Sampath alias 'Kaluma' was further remanded till April 05, by the Mahara Chief Magistrate, Heshantha de Mel today (March 22) .

The attorney who appeared on behalf of the accused told Court that the suspect's life was under threat as his association to drug kingpin Makandure Madhush had been revealed through the media. Further, the lawyer representing 'Kaluma' claimed that those who were against Madush were behind the threats.

The attorney thereafter requested that his client who is currently in remand at the Mahara Prison be transfered to another prison other than the Mahara or Magazine prisons.

Thereafter the Maharagama Police made an open court request that the suspect be permitted to be produced before the Nugegoda Magistrate's Court on March 27

Considering the facts of the case, the Magistrate ordered the detainee to be kept at the Welikada or the Colombo remand prison.

Further, the request of the Maharagama Police to produce the suspect before the Nugegoda Magistrate's Court on March 27 was granted.

The suspect was arrested in connection with the theft of a diamond worth Rs 5000 million that was recovered in Keselwatte, Panadura on Mar 05.

The arrest was made after police had recovered the diamond at the suspect's house in Pitigala.
