The maximum retail price (MRP) imposed on coconuts has been lifted with effect from yesterday (Oct 23) by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA).
A gazette had been issued to this effect by CAA Chairman Lalith Senaweera repealing the MRP of Rs 75 imposed on a coconut through a gazette in 2017.
CAA Deputy Director Samantha Karunarathne explained that this decision had been made to encourage a competitive market. However, she said that an MRP would be re-imposed if the commodity is sold at unreasonable rates.
