Residents of 98 houses which were completely destroyed due to the Meethotamulla disaster are to be speedily provided houses as an initial step. President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe directed officials to take measures in this regard during a special discussion held this morning at the auditorium of the Disaster Management Ministry.
It was also decided to provide Rs.250,000 to each of the families to purchase furniture for their houses.
The Government Information Department, in a media release, further stated that the Urban Development Authority (UDA) will take steps to provide houses for families who are currently proposed to be relocated as they live in areas designated as danger zones. Accordingly, the UDA is expected to provide these families with houses by the first week of July.
Furthermore, the Valuation Department and other relavent agencies have been instructed to conclude the damage assessment from the disaster during this week and hand over a damage assessment report. All funds for compensation will be released immediately after this is completed. The Prime Minister has ordered the Treasury to release all funds needed for compensation purposes, the Government stated.
