The Meteorological Department has warned that the 'FANI' (pronounced as FONI) cyclone which was developing in the seas off Trincomalee was nearing towards Sri Lanka since 2:30 am today (Apr 30).
According to the Department, the 'severe cyclonic storm' was located about 640 kilometres North-East of Trincomalee yesterday.
This cyclonic storm could intensify further into a 'very severe cyclonic storm' during the next 12 hours, the Met. Department predicted.
Very heavy falls above 150 mm can be expected at some places in the Eastern, Uva, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, Western and North-western provinces and in the Mannar district while heavy falls upto about 100 mm will also occur at other places.
