More than 400 police officers engaged in a cleanup campaign to remove litter from a six-kilometer beach stretch between Kollupitiya and Wellawatte today (Nov 25).
“We are doing this to set a example to the people,” Police Spokesman SSP Ruwan Gunasekara said speaking to reporters during the exercise.
He explained this was carried out in keeping with the environment protection campaign launched by the Police yesterday.
The Police Spokesman explained that 11 teams comprising 40 police officers each had been deployed 500 metres from each other to clean up the beach stretch.
“To establish a secure country, we need to create a safe environment,” SSP Gunasekara opined.
Cricketer turned politician Sanath Jayasuriya who was also present insisted that such activities should be carried out islandwide to maintain a “clean country”, and enable people to enjoy a healthy life.
“The public should also engage in these activities because this is being done for Sri Lanka”, he pointed out.
The one-time deputy minister also urged the people to desist from polluting the environment especially in the backdrop of clean up activities taking place.
