A two-day police operation on Friday and Saturday (Mar 09) saw more than 527 individuals being arrested for drunk driving offences.
The special operation was carried out from midnight until the early hours of both days under the direct supervision of IGP Pujith Jayasundara. Directives to conduct the operation were issued after the police chief was notified of individuals driving under the influence of liquor following midnight parties especially during the weekends.
Accordingly, 222 suspects were arrested on March 08 while 305 drivers were arrested over charges of drunk driving yesterday.
Suspects included lawyers, medical officers and several other high-ranking individuals across various sectors, Police Spokesman S.P. Ruwan Gunasekara said. He added that these individuals will be produced before courts seeking an order to temporarily suspend their driving licenses.
The Police Headquarters noted that operations of this nature would be conducted in future as well.
