The Power and Energy Ministry Patali Champika Ranawaka at a media briefing yesterday said attempts are being made to popularize bicycles among the public as a mode to travel short distance to conserve energy. He said with this in mind a bicycle race will be held on June 7 at 7.00 a.m. from Kimbulawala junction, Sri Jayawardenapura to Independence Square as the second phase of the energy conservation programme parallel to the National Energy Conservation Month declared from May 15 to June 15. Ranawaka made these observations at a press conference at the Power and Energy Ministry auditorium. The minister said it has been estimated that if individuals can use a bicycle for a few kilometres for their day to day travelling, the country can conserve over 1.5 million litres of fossil fuel. He added that this will have a major impact on the reduction of fossil fuel import curtailing the outflow of currency.
