Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa today rejected the government allegations saying that he had tried to use the military to remain in office after the election defeat. “I deny in the strongest terms the reports of attempts to use the military to influence election results. During decades in politics, I have always bowed to the people's verdict. Wins and losses are a natural part of political life,” Mr Rajapaksa tweeted in his official twitter handle this morning. 'I accepted the outcome long before the final results were released and congratulated the new president- MR' he said.

A Sri Lankan man was apprehended at Suvarnabhumi airport for attempting to smuggle wildlife out of the country after three ball pythons were found hidden in his underwear, the Bangkok post reported.
The UK government has unveiled a package of reforms to simplify imports from developing countries which allows for more garments manufactured in Sri Lanka to enter the UK tariff-free.
