Former President of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed arrived in Colombo last night to break journey on his way to the United Kingdom for medical treatment. Mr Nasheed declined to make comments to media saying he had a strict understanding with the Sri Lankan government that he would avoid making his visit a media event.
The former president of Maldives who is currently in Sri Lanka due to leave late tonight for UK to undergo medical treatment.
Earlier the Sri Lankan government mediated with Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen for the release of his predecessor Mohamed Nasheed who is now serving a jail term. The task was undertaken by Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera and Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake who flew to Male last Wednesday on an un-announced visit.
Mr Nasheed was allowed to leave the country yesterday after he had requested the Maldivian Government to grant him permission to travel to the UK for treatment, which the relevant authorities of the Government granted.
He has signed the standard guarantee document agreeing to return to the Maldives, to serve the remainder of his sentence following the completion of the medical treatment in the United Kingdom. Mr Nasheed’s brother is acting as guarantor during his stay abroad.
