The Navy has begun to remove debris that clogged the Wakwella Bridge in Galle, yesterday (Jun 10) in a bid to mitigate a possible flood situation in the coming day.
Logs, tree branches and other floating debris which had begun to clog the Wakwella bridge, which lies over the Gin ganga, had been removed by Navy personnel attached to the Southern Naval Area Command.
The action had been taken in response to a warning by the Meteorological Department predicting intermittent rains over the coming days.
In the last few years clogged choke points such as the Wakwella bridge had been identified as some of the main reasons for flooding.
