NBRO warns of more landslides if rains continue

The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) issued an fresh alert for landslide prone areas of landslides, rock falls, subsidence and cut slope failures.  "People living in the vulnerable areas should be extra vigilant and should be ready to promptly move into safe places if heavy rains continue,"

According to the alert, all mountainous areas, manmade cut slopes and roads, especially all the landslide susceptible areas previously identified by NBRO, in the districts of Kandy, Ratnapura, Nuwara Eliya, Kegalle and Kalutara are at risk and people need to pay special attention.

The NBRO identified Udapalatha and Gangaihahalakorale divisional secretariat divisions and surrounding areas in Kandy District, Kiriella, Ayagama, Eheliyagoda, Ratnapura & Kuruwita divisional secretariat divisions and surrounding areas in Ratnapura district, Ambagamuwakorale, divisional secretariat division and surrounding areas in Nuwara Eliya district, Deraniyagala, Dehiowita, Ruwanwella, Yatiyanthota, Bulathkohu pitiya, Aranayake, Kegalle, Warakapola, Rambukkana, Mawanella and Galigamuwa divisional secretariat divisions and surrounding areas in Kegalle District and Agalawatta, Palindanuwara, Walallawita, lngiriya, Matumaga, Kalutara and Bulathsinhala divisional secretariat divisions and surrounding areas in the Kalutara district as landslide susceptible areas.

It also requested the people to always pay attention to pre-landslide signs like slanting of trees or posts, cracks developing on ground and walls, and sudden appearance of muddy water coming out from the ground or from springs and move away from hazardous areas when they notice those signs.
