Nineteen injured in head-on collision between two buses

Nineteen persons were injured after a head-on collision between two private buses at Thalalla in Gandara this afternoon. 

Several passengers were trapped inside the two vehicles immediately after the accident, resulting in police and area residents having to work extremely hard to pull them out from the wreakage. The injured persons were admitted to the Thalalla Hospital and the Matara General Hospital. 

The injured include four females and three schoolchildren. Four of the injured admitted to the Matara General Hospital were in serious condition, a hospital spokesman said. 

One of the buses was transporting passengers from Matara to Radampala via Dickwella, while the other bus was a special tours bus taking a from Tangalle to Matara.

Police said rainy weather prevailed in the area at the time of the incident, adding that the special tours bus had strayed onto the wrong side of the road, hitting the other bus head-on.

Both buses suffered severe damage due to the accident and drivers of both buses also suffered serious injuries.
