No evidence to prove charges against Dr. Shafi ; CID tells court

News

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today (Jun 27) told court that no evidence was available to prove any allegation levelled against Kurunegala Hospital doctor Mohamed Shafi.

Charges against the doctor included his alleged links to terrorism, illegal acquisition of assets, and the sterlisation of women while performing C-Section procedures.

Meanwhile, the director of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital submitted a report before the Kurunegala Magistrate's court on complaints which had been filed against the doctor for allegedly sterilising women.

The CID also informed court that of the 615 complaints it had received against the doctor, matters concerning 468 cases had been reported before court and 147 are currently under investigation.

Thirteen mothers have been referred to a special investigation board to undergo medical tests while 11 complaints were false, court heard today.

During today's hearing, court instructed the CID to submit a report on how the committee would be carrying out the tests on these mothers to determine whether they have been sterilised or not.

The CID noted that based on the statements made by the medical staff of the hospital, it has been confirmed that the doctor had not sterilised women during cesarean procedures.

Accordingly, the CID told court that it would discuss with the Defence Secretary and arrive at a decision concerning the detention of the doctor since the charges could not be proven against him.
