President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday (Sept 22) said that no political party can form a government without the support of an alliance of another party.
Addressing a Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) district rally in Matara, Mr. Sirisena said that the next government could be formed only by forming a progressive alliance.
However, President Sirisena who leads the SLFP said his party would not join with another party which is embroiled in corruption, or includes members of underworld leaders and murderers.
While observing that the opposition and the ruling parties are engaged in talks with foreign missions in the run-up to the presidential polls, President Sirisena emphasised that the next government should not succumb to the pressure of international forces.
He pointed out that the next government must implement a plan which would defeat corrupt elements, create equality among the communities, and be favourable to the country.
