No PM candidate before next Parliamentary election

News

President Maithripala Sirisena said yesterday (May 06)  that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) would not nominate a Prime Ministerial candidate before the next Parliamentary election, the government news portal reported.
At the discussion held with former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, President Sirisena explained the “disadvantages” of naming a Prime Ministerial candidate before the election. He made his position clear when former President Rajapaksa’s group said the SLFP should name its Prime Ministerial candidate in the party’s run-up to the election, the report said. The SLFP issuing a statement said five key topics were discussed during the meeting. Accordingly, the Prime Ministerial candidate at the forthcoming General Election, contesting the General Election with the United Peoples Freedom Alliance logo, the dissolution of the local government bodies and politicisation of the Financial Crimes Investigation Division were among those discussed.   The matters deliberated are scheduled to be presented at the SLFP Central Committee to be discussed at length, the report said.
