Northern Province private bus workers stage strike
Private bus workers in the Northern Province staged a strike today in protest at the conduct of Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) workers during a fast held on February 2.
Private bus workers said the protest was prompted by SLTB workers burning an effigy of Northern Province Transport Minister B. Deniswaran during their fast. Private bus workers said the provincial transport minister had worked hard to resolve grievances of SLTB workers who were engaged in the fast. They condemned the conduct of the SLTB workers, stating that the act was a direct insult on the provincial minister.
Accordingly, representatives of private bus workers in the Northern Province traveled to Jaffna today to meet Minister Deniswaran and hand over a petition to him asking for an investigation into the incident.
Though private bus workers refrained from engaging in services within the province, both private and SLTB services from the North to other provinces remained unaffected.
