A woman who had allegedly been stealing jewelry worth hundreds of thousands of rupees has been taken into custody by Ambalantota police. She was produced before the Hambantota Magistrate's Court, where she was ordered to be kept in remand custody till August 25.
The suspect had been arrested while trying to allegedly steal jewelry from a jewelry shop in Ambalantota town. Employees at the shop had become suspicious of her behavior and had notified the police, who arrested her at the scene.
Subsequent investigations have identified the suspect as the woman who allegedly stole a necklace container valued at Rs.84,000 from a jewelry shop in Ambalantota town on April 3, this year. CCTV footage at the shop had recorded the suspect stealing the container.
It is also believed that the suspect is the same woman who allegedly stole four gold chains valued at Rs.360,000 from a jewelry shop in Mathugama town.
The suspect had been arrested for jewelry theft in Welimada, Pettah and Dambulla. It has now come to light that she had a warrant out for her arrest in Dambulla.
A 20-year-old man who allegedly aided the suspect to engage in these jewelry thefts has also been arrested. He is a resident of Hambantota. Police said both suspects been living together in a rented house in Maithrigama, Hambantota.
The female suspect had allegedly confessed that she sold the stolen jewelry at various places in the island. Investigations are ongoing.
