One injured after train-tipper crash in Kilinochchi

One person sustained serious injuries when a tipper vehicle collided with a tipper vehicle collided with the Jaffna-Colombo train at the level crossing at Murukandi junction in Kilinochchi on Tuesday (21). The injured person has been identified as the driver of the tipper.

The incident had occurred at around 7.00am. Area residents said the tipper driver had tried to drive across the level crossing while ignoring the warning bells and signs warning of the oncoming train. In his haste to drive across, the driver had panicked, resulting in the vehicle stalling in the middle of the crossing. He had tried to jump clear at the last moment but the impact of the train crashing into the tipper had flung him outwards. 

The driver, who sustained serious injuries in the crash, was admitted to the Kilinochchi hospital. The tipper vehicle had also sustained serious damage in the incident. 

Kilinochchi police are investigating.
