One of the five COVID-19 infected remand prisoners who had allegedly escaped from the Gallella COVID-19 treatment centre in Polonnaruwa was found by Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) from Dematapitiya in Madampe, Chilaw.
The 22-year-old patient is a resident of Wennappuwa, Sirigampala. He had been in remand custody when he tested positive for COVID-19 and was transferred to the treatment centre in Polonnaruwa.
Health officials have taken steps to hand over the patient to prison authorities.
Health authorities stated that the patient had told them that he had taken a bus from Polonnaruwa to Kurunegala and thereafter, had taken another bus from there to Chilaw.
The three-wheeler driver who transported the patient from Chilaw to Dematapitiya and a person who had given refuge to the patient have been directed to self-quarantine, health officials added.
