Over 200,000 affected by adverse weather

Over 200,000 persons have been affected by the prevailing adverse weather conditions, according to the latest statistics released by the Disaster Management Center (DMC). According to these statistics, 207,576 persons from 47,922 families are affected. Eight people have been confirmed dead while at least eight others remained missing. Nine persons were also reported injured. 

The number of displaced has also risen sharply. According to the DMC, as at 10.00am today, 134,466 persons from 29,004 families have been displaced due to the adverse weather. They are being accommodated at 176 welfare camps.

The DMC also revealed that over 1300 houses have sustained damage due to the weather.

Colombo district has been the hardest hit by the weather in terms of displacing people from their homes. According to statistics, 99,314 persons from 20,184 families in the district have been displaced. They are being accommodated at 36 welfare camps. Gampaha district has the next highest number of displaced, with 32,490 persons from 8076 families being housed in 74 camps.

However, reports from the North indicate as many as 18,603 persons from 5224 families have have been displaced due to the floods and sheltered in temporary camps. The DMC is yet to confirm these stats. 

According to the Mulliathivu District Secretariat more than fifty houses have been completely damaged while eleven partly are damaged. Fishing boats anchored at harbor have also damaged while some have gone missing.
