The Parliamentary debate on the People's Bank (Amendment) Bill has been rescheduled for September 19.
Parliament was originally due to hold the debate on the controversial bill on September 4. However, the Government agreed to a postponement after Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa wrote to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya asking for a postponement.
Mr Rajapaksa noted that serious concerns have been raised regarding the bill among various sections in the banking sector, particularly among employees of People’s Bank.
The Opposition Leader also said concerns have been expressed that the bill would have a direct impact on the stability of People’s Bank.
Accordingly, Party Leaders' have now decided to hold the committee stage debate and a final vote on the bill on the 19th.
