A writ petition was filed today in the Supreme Court requesting that the gazette notification for the November 16 presidential election be suspended. The petition was filed by former Galle Mayor Methsiri de Silva.
The petitioner also requests that the decision of the Elections Commission to call for nominations for the elections on October 7 be suspended as well.
The petitioner states that the term of office of the current President is 6 years and if it is limited to 5 years it would have affect the sovereignty of the people.
Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya and members of the commission have been named as respondents in the petition.
