Cabinet approval has been granted to construct a 300 Megawatt new coal power plant as a part of the expansion plans of the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant.
The power plant, which would be the fourth of its kind as a part of the expansion project, is to be constructed within the premises of the Norochcholai coal power plant.
A cabinet paper to this effect had been put forward by Power and Energy Minister Ravi Karunanayake.
A press release issued by the government said that the proposal had been submitted after considering Sri Lanka's electricity generation plan between 2018 and 2037.
