Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told Parliament today that the exact cause for the explosion at the Salawa Army Camp in Kosgama is still unknown but said the government would make public the preliminary report of the tri forces committee that has been appointed to inquire into the incident as soon as it is available.
He said two investigations are underway, one by the tri-forces and one by the CID, to ascertain what caused the massive explosion in the ammunitions storage area of the camp in Sunday night that left one dead and several injured. Many houses as well as other buildings in the vicinity of the camp were also damaged by the blast.
The Prime Minister said that during the war, weapons were stored in many places and but now measures are being taken to establish concrete bunkers in sparsely populated areas of the country in order to prevent such incidents in the future.
He promised compensation for those whose properties were damaged in the blast and other facilities till they can all return to their homes.
Joint Opposition group leader MP Dinesh Gunawardena raised the matter in Parliament today.
