The Police Headquarters says it has not granted leave to Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Chief Inspector Nishantha de Silva to travel overseas.
The statement came in response to reports that the chief inspector left for Switzerland along with his family last afternoon.
His departure came in the wake of SSP Shani Abeysekara's transfer from the post of CID Director to the Personal Assistant of the DIG-in-charge of the Galle District.
Both SSP Abeysekara and CI de Silva had been involved in the investigations of certain high profile crimes that had taken place before 2015.
Among them were the abduction of 11 youths, the killing of journalist Lasantha Wickrematunga, and the abduction of journalist Keith Noyahr.
