Power Ministry to re-evaluate bids for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant

News

The Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy has called fresh bids for a 300MW Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) plant to be established in Kerawalapitiya after objections were raised by several companies over the previous bidding process.

Ministry Secretary B.M.S. Batagoda told the Sunday Times that fresh bids have been called as six companies which were rejected after the evaluation process, which resulted in the technical committee appointed to evaluate the bids recommending a Korean company to construct the plant.

After objections were raised by the failed bidders, the matter was put to Cabinet. However, Cabinet observed that it could not intervene in the bidding process and instructed the Ministry to re-evaluate the bids.

Accordingly, fresh bids were called for the six companies as well as the company which was awarded the tender in the first occasion. The Secretary said the Ministry had laid down new and tougher conditions to be met when submitting the bids.
