A pregnant woman was among two persons who were injured when a wild elephant attacked the three-wheeler they were traveling in at Walawawatta, Ambalantota last afternoon (4).
The appearance of the elephant last morning caused panic in the area. A team of officials from the Hambantota wildlife office had later visited the area on being informed of a wild elephant being sighted, but could not locate the animal. They had then instructed residents to remain vigilent and left the area.
However, the elephant had then attacked the three-wheeler in the afternoon, injuring two including the pregnant woman.
Area residents say wild elephants are not present in their area and believe the elephant had come from Madunagala after crossing the Walawe River.
An officer from the Hambantota wildlife office said the wild elephant was tracked down and measures were taken to chase it away from the area.
