President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed the Excise Department to initiate amendments to the Excise Act in order to strengthen the powers of the Police to take action against law offenders.
"The existing law had certain restrictions on the Police while enforcing the law against those who breach the Excise Act," a spokesman for the Excise Department told Times Online.
Accordingly, the President had instructed Excise officials to initiate amendments to the laws in order to enhance the powers vested with the Police in this regard, the spokesman said.
According to the Presidential Secretariat, these instructions were issued during a meeting with the President and Excise officials earlier today (May 02).
