President Maithripala Sirisena has expressed regret over the use of tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters of the Bodu Bala Sena opposite the Presidential Secretariat earlier today (Nov 19).
Issuing a press release the President's media division noted that President Sirisena was not notified of a meeting with the BBS monks.
The release noted that the President had ordered an immediate investigation into those who had authorized such actions.
The President, who engaged in a cordial discussion with the protesters afterwards had accepted their letter regarding an appeal for BBS member Gnanasara Thero which was handed over to him.
